The persecution of Christians is a painful reality in many parts of the world. In countries such as North Korea, Afghanistan, Somalia and China, Christians face intense oppression that makes it extremely difficult to practice their faith. Among the most significant challenges is the difficulty of obtaining and distributing Bibles, a crucial element of believers’ spirituality and community life.
In North Korea, Kim Jong-un’s regime has established strict control over all forms of religion, viewing Christianity as a threat to its authority. Possession of a Bible can lead to arrest, torture and, in many cases, execution. Missionaries and international Christian organizations that try to bring Bibles into the country face severe penalties and a relentless security apparatus. Bibles that do manage to enter are often smuggled in fragments or in digital formats, to evade detection.
In Afghanistan and Somalia, the situation is equally dire. Both predominantly Muslim countries view conversion to Christianity as an act of treason. Here, Christians operate underground, and any attempt to distribute Bibles is extremely dangerous. Organizations attempting to support these believers must do so through underground networks, using creative methods such as distributing e-Bible books or secure mobile apps.
China, despite being one of the world’s largest economies, maintains strict control over religious practices. The government allows only approved versions of the Bible, and any other version can be confiscated. Unregistered churches, known as house churches, face raids and closures. Distributing Bibles in these communities is an act of courage, as the consequences can include arrest and imprisonment.
These examples illustrate the enormous difficulties faced by persecuted Christians in their attempt to obtain Bibles. International Christian organizations continue to seek innovative ways to bring God’s Word to these dark places, demonstrating unwavering courage and determination in their mission to support brothers and sisters in the faith.
