Rising persecution of Christians in Mexico raises concerns

In recent years, the persecution of Christians in Mexico has increased alarmingly, especially in rural communities and areas controlled by organized crime. Although the country is not traditionally seen as a hotbed of religious persecution, various organizations have warned that attacks on pastors, priests and believers have intensified, putting religious freedom at risk.

The main focus of violence against Christians in Mexico comes from drug cartels, who see religious leaders as a threat to their control in certain areas. Pastors and priests, who work to promote peace and social change, are frequently targeted for intimidation, kidnapping and even murder. Between 2018 and 2022, several Catholic priests were killed for refusing to collaborate with criminal groups or for opposing their activities. Evangelical Christians have also suffered attacks, especially in regions where their influence has grown.

In addition to organized crime, another factor in persecution is found in indigenous communities in the south of the country, where certain groups have rejected the presence of Christianity, perceiving it as a threat to their traditions. In these cases, Christians are frequently expelled from their communities, their property is confiscated and they face acts of violence.

Despite this situation, the Mexican government has been criticized for its inaction in protecting persecuted Christian communities. International organizations have urged the government to reinforce security in the most affected regions and to take measures to guarantee religious freedom, protected by the Constitution. However, the lack of a clear approach continues to put millions of Christians in the country at risk, whose faith makes them targets of violence.
