The situation of persecuted Christians in the world after the presidency of Donald Trump

Since the conclusion of Donald Trump’s presidency in January 2021, the persecution of Christians around the world has shown worrying trends. According to the 2025 World Persecution Watch List published by Open Doors, more than 380 million Christians face high levels of persecution and discrimination for their faith, which represents an increase from the 365 million reported in 2024.

During the Trump administration, policies were implemented that directly affected persecuted Christians. For example, in January 2025, President Trump suspended for at least 90 days the United States Refugee Admissions Program (USRAP), which in fiscal year 2024 had resettled 100,000 people fleeing persecution, including nearly 30,000 Christians. This measure raised concerns among religious organizations, who feared a negative impact on those seeking refuge due to religious persecution.

Globally, persecution has increased in various regions. In sub-Saharan Africa, violence has forced the displacement of 16 million Christians, and Nigeria remains a hotspot, with 3,100 Christians killed between October 2023 and September 2024, accounting for 69% of global murders in that period.

In Asia, countries such as North Korea and Afghanistan continue to be places of extreme persecution. In Latin America, nations such as Mexico and Nicaragua have experienced increases in violence and discrimination against Christians, driven by organized crime and repressive government policies.

In conclusion, following the presidency of Donald Trump, the situation for persecuted Christians around the world has not improved and, in some cases, has worsened. Restrictive immigration policies and a lack of international attention have contributed to millions of Christians continuing to face threats, violence and discrimination because of their faith. It is imperative that the international community redouble its efforts to protect religious freedom and provide support to those who suffer for their beliefs.
