Pope Leo XIV intensifies his action in defense of persecuted Christians

Since his election as Pope on May 18, 2025, Leo XIV has implemented a series of significant gestures to improve the situation of Christian communities suffering from persecution in various regions of the world.

In his first public appearance during the inaugural Mass of his pontificate, the Pope made a forceful call for peace in conflict-ravaged areas such as Ukraine, Gaza, and Myanmar, and offered the Vatican as a mediator in negotiations, especially between Kyiv and Moscow. In early May, during a meeting with pilgrims of Eastern rites, he promised to “do everything possible” for peace in the Middle East and Ukraine, highlighting his commitment to communities displaced by war and violence.

In Gaza, the Christian faithful, a small minority caught up in the conflict, place their hope in this new pontiff. Local church leaders expressed confidence that he will continue the outreach initiated by his predecessor, such as the nightly calls to the Holy Family Church to provide spiritual comfort.

Furthermore, Pope Leo XIV has reinforced the Vatican’s attention to the Eastern Churches. He requested that diaspora communities preserve their traditions and liturgies, and stressed the need for Latin Rite bishops to accompany them with clear integration policies.

These first three months of his pontificate reflect a clear strategy: diplomatic action, spiritual accompaniment, and tangible support for those murdered, displaced, or marginalized for their faith. Pope Leo XIV thus presents himself as an active voice in defense of persecuted Christians, combining media visibility with global diplomatic initiatives.
