Massacre in the Democratic Republic of Congo: 70 Christians beheaded in a church

In an act of extreme violence, 70 Christians were found decapitated inside a church in the village of Maiba, located in the province of North Kivu, east of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). The macabre discovery, reported on February 18, 2025, has shocked the local community and generated a wave of international outrage.

Details of the attack

According to preliminary reports, the attack began with the kidnapping of 20 people, who were forced to enter the temple. Later, another 50 people who were trying to rescue them were captured and executed in the same way. The victims, among whom were elderly people and children, were found with their hands tied and signs of torture.

Possible perpetrators

Although no group has officially claimed responsibility for the massacre, initial investigations point to the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) as the main suspects. This jihadist group, affiliated with the Islamic State, is known for its violent attacks in the region and has intensified its activities in recent years. The lack of control by the Congolese authorities has allowed the expansion of Islamic extremism in the area, exacerbating religious persecution.

International reactions

Religious organizations and communities around the world have expressed their disgust at this atrocious act. The SIT, for example, has been working in this community for a long time and knows first-hand the barbarity that Christians live through and the few international responsibilities that exist to improve the lives of these Christians.

Context of violence in the region

The province of North Kivu has been the scene of constant clashes and attacks by various armed groups. The civilian population, especially Christian communities, has suffered repeated acts of violence, which has caused a mass exodus in search of safety. The international community has repeatedly urged the DRC government to strengthen security measures and implement effective strategies to combat extremism and protect vulnerable populations.

This tragic incident underlines the urgent need to address the growing threat of extremism in the region and to ensure the protection of fundamental human rights of all religious communities.
