Africa is the continent that contains the largest number of new Catholics, according to Fides Agency data, more than eight million. Despite having a large Christian community, they are also the ones that suffer the most problems of persecution. Nigeria is one of the most unsafe countries for Christians.
In facts: Three nuns and a seminarian were kidnapped along with the driver while they were going to a funeral at the beginning of the month. In another part of the country, an armed gang kidnapped three Benedictine monks. Just a few days ago, two of them were freed, while one was murdered and his body was thrown into the river.
It is not the first time this year that Christians are persecuted in Nigeria. Pope Francis prayed in January for a priest murdered in the parish.
